Allen is a seasoned professional with a strong background in both the operational and marketing aspects of small businesses, as well as a track record of technical innovation in CNC machines and 3D printing for custom sign-making and prototyping. His expertise extends beyond technical proficiency to include a natural talent for communication, vision-building, and fostering structural innovation. Currently, Allen serves as the Executive Director of the Franklin Center for Innovation, where he is dedicated to advancing community-driven innovation, entrepreneurship, and hands-on education. Under his leadership, the center has expanded its impact by fostering collaboration between local businesses, educators, and makers, ensuring that cutting-edge technology and creative problem-solving are accessible to all.
Prior to his work at the Franklin Center, Allen spent two and a half years shaping an innovative high school program in Fayette County, leaving a lasting impact on both pedagogical and organizational fronts. He developed the "5 P’s" framework—Proposal, Pattern-Making, Prototyping, Production, and Presentation—guiding students through a structured approach to innovation. He also pioneered community-engaged learning, encouraging students to tackle real-world problems and collaborate across disciplines. Additionally, Allen introduced models of student leadership, emphasizing specialization within project teams and instilling a strong sense of responsibility.
On the organizational side, Allen played a pivotal role in restructuring The Learning Center, reorganizing it into departments based on end-product form. He launched the "Department of Innovation," featuring co-located classrooms for different phases of the creative process. By linking student roles directly to project completion, he fostered a culture of accountability and community engagement. Regular showcases of student work further strengthened this connection, highlighting both individual achievements and collective progress.
Allen’s ability to forge connections and communicate vision is evident in his success securing donations and partnerships, including 3D printers, CNC machines, and collaborations with organizations such as the University of Kentucky Solar Car Team and Microsoft. His unique blend of technical and cultural innovation is further demonstrated through his involvement in artistic and product development work, emphasizing a holistic approach to community-driven projects and education. Across all his endeavors, Allen exemplifies a rare combination of technical expertise, leadership, and a deep understanding of teamwork and relationship-building.
